About Us
This site provides basic biographical and licensing information on the works and career of Oliver Smith, one of the twentieth century’s best-known American set designers. Working in theater, ballet, opera, and film, Smith won eight Tony Awards and co-produced American Ballet Theatre for forty years. It is fortunate for historians that researchers now have access to a vast body of Smith’s design work in the Oliver Smith Papers at the Library of Congress’ Music Division.
This site provides galleries showing samples of some of Smith’s artwork. His performing arts legacy lives on through frequent revivals of his works on stage, particularly for the ballet. Copyright licensing of individual images and entire productions is available here.
